Imphal, Feb 14:
A day after the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, women across various locations staged protests demanding the restoration of N. Biren Singh as Chief Minister.
N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9 and was later appointed as caretaker CM by Governor AK Bhalla. However, after the BJP failed to elect a new leader within four days, the President of India imposed President’s Rule in the state under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution. The Manipur Legislative Assembly remains under suspended animation, as per a statement from the DIPR.
Women protesters from Pangei to Esheika condemned N. Biren Singh’s resignation and demanded his reinstatement. They also protested against internal conflicts among BJP MLAs and called for strict action, including the destruction of poppy plantations and deportation of illegal immigrants. The demonstrations escalated into a mass rally.
Similar protests were also reported in Keibi and Uyumpok, where demonstrators voiced the same demands. The situation remains tense as public discontent over political instability grows.
