The Manipur Indigenous Alliance (MIA) was formally established today at its Founding Conference held at Meitram, Imphal West, with the stated objective of bringing Indigenous communities together to protect their land, heritage, identity, institutions, livelihoods and future.
The Founding Conference adopted the Constitution of the Manipur Indigenous Alliance, establishing the party as a democratic, constitutional and peaceful political organisation committed to representing the legitimate aspirations and interests of the people of Manipur.
According to the party, the MIA has been formed in response to the present situation in Manipur and the growing need for Indigenous communities to come together on a common democratic and constitutional political platform for the protection and preservation of Manipur and the well-being of its people.
The party said it is committed to protecting the rights, heritage, institutions, livelihoods, land and cultural identity of the Indigenous communities of Manipur, while working for democratic governance, social justice, economic opportunity, environmental protection and sustainable development.
The MIA also stated that it seeks to strengthen participatory and decentralised governance and contribute to peace, harmony and national integration within the constitutional framework of India. It said its political objectives would be pursued exclusively through democratic, constitutional and peaceful means.
The Founding Conference elected Soraisam Surendra Singh as President and Gaidingmei Golmei as Vice-President. Khaidem Devchand Singh was elected General Secretary (Administration), Raingam Keishing General Secretary (Organisation), and Bk. Joyson General Secretary (Publicity & Media). Ronald Naorem was elected Treasurer and Abishai Kashung Secretary.
The Conference also adopted the party flag and approved the proposed party symbol, subject to its approval and allotment by the Election Commission of India in accordance with law.
A significant decision taken at the Conference was to proceed with registration of the Manipur Indigenous Alliance with the Election Commission of India under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The President and General Secretary (Administration) were authorised to complete the necessary application, documentation and correspondence with the Commission.
The party office of the Manipur Indigenous Alliance will be established at Sagolband Tera Khuraijam Leikai, Imphal West–795001, which will serve as the central office for its organisational and political activities.
