RIMS observes World Suicide Prevention Day

The Department of Psychiatry, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in collaboration with the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Students’ Union (RIMSSU), observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 today under the theme ”Change the Narrative” with an interactive programme held at Kamal Hall, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal.

The programme was graced by Prof. Laishram Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), RIMS, along with Prof. Ratan Konjengbam, Sub-Dean (Examination); Asst. Prof. G. Tarun Kumar Sharma, Sub-Dean (Student Affairs); and Rubel Debberma, General Secretary, RIMSSU.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Laishram Rajesh Singh said that suicide prevention is about creating hope, connection and a sense of belonging. He stressed the need to recognise distress, listen without judgment and provide timely support. He urged the RIMS community to ensure that everyone feels heard, valued and supported, while calling for greater compassion, early intervention and efforts to keep hope alive.

During the observance, various speakers delivered insightful talks on ”Causes& Prevention of Suicide,” “The Students’ Voice,” “Students’ Testimonials,” “Tele-MANAS:

An Overview,” and ”Stress Management: Practising What We Preach.” The programme aimed to foster open conversations on suicide prevention, mental well-being and coping strategies, while emphasising the importance of seeking and offering support within the student community. The programme witnessed active participation from staff and students.

Meanwhile, the Department of Clinical Psychology, RIMS, Imphal, organised an awareness, psychological assessment-cum-interaction programme in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day at Keibi High School, Sawombung Block, Imphal East, Manipur.

Dr. Sameeta Ng., Assistant Professor and Head of the Department (In-charge), led the programme along with other doctors from the department. The team conducted an awareness session, carried out psychological assessments and interacted with members of the local community, providing guidance and support on mental health and suicide prevention.
