Welcome President’s Rule, But safeguard Manipur

The imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur has sparked both apprehension and hope among the people. While this move signifies the failure of the state’s political machinery, it also brings with it the promise of a neutral and decisive administration under the Central Government. We, at Imphal Times, extend our trust in the Union Government’s ability to restore peace, protect the people, and uphold justice.
One of the most pressing concerns remains the safety and protection of village defenders. The prolonged crisis has left many vulnerable, and it is imperative that the Central Government ensures their security from external threats. Additionally, we strongly urge the Governor of Manipur, who has prior knowledge of unlawful activities committed by Kuki militants even before May 3, 2023, to act decisively. The existing ceasefire agreements with these militants should be reassessed and revoked, if necessary, to prevent further destabilization of the state.
Another crucial issue that demands immediate attention is the intrusion of illegal immigrants. The demographic and socio-political fabric of Manipur is at risk, and we firmly believe that the Governor, under the supervision of the President of India, must take stringent measures to curb illegal infiltration. The territorial integrity and security of Manipur must not be compromised under any circumstances.
Furthermore, we expect President’s Rule to bring an end to rampant corruption that has plagued both lawmakers and bureaucrats. The misuse of public funds, favoritism in governance, and deep-seated malpractice must be addressed with an iron hand. We anticipate that this period of central administration will serve as a wake-up call to clean up governance and re-establish ethical leadership.
A particularly distressing development in recent years has been the intimidation of journalists by certain government officers who employ goons to silence free press. This is an alarming violation of democratic values. We urge the Union Government to take stern action against such elements, ensuring that the fourth pillar of democracy remains free and fearless.
At the same time, we must recognize that President’s Rule is a temporary measure, and its success will be determined by how efficiently the Central Government addresses the core issues facing Manipur. Law and order must be restored, ethnic tensions must be de-escalated, and administrative efficiency must be prioritized. The people of Manipur do not seek a long-term rule by the Centre but rather a swift and effective intervention that leads to a stable, democratic government in the near future.
One of the most crucial responsibilities of the Central Government during this period is the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Thousands of families have been uprooted due to violence and conflict, and their rehabilitation should be a top priority. Adequate housing, financial assistance, and security measures must be implemented to ensure that displaced individuals can return to their homes safely and with dignity. The process of resettlement should be just and inclusive, taking into account the needs of all affected communities.
We in the Imphal Times emphasize the need to ensure that all provisions and rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Manipur are upheld and extended to all citizens. The principles of justice, equality, and fundamental rights must not be sidelined during this period of central administration. Every individual, regardless of their background, must have access to security, economic opportunities, and essential services, reinforcing the state’s commitment to democratic values.
We also call upon the people of Manipur to remain vigilant and proactive. The suspension of an elected government does not mean that citizens should be passive observers. Instead, civil society, student bodies, and responsible organizations must continue to voice their concerns and ensure that their rights and aspirations are not sidelined during this period of central governance.
Moreover, we urge the Central Government to handle the situation with wisdom and impartiality, avoiding any favoritism or political maneuvering that could deepen existing divides. The focus should be on reconciliation, rebuilding trust, and paving the way for lasting peace. The people of Manipur deserve governance that prioritizes their welfare over political gains.
Ultimately, while we welcome the President’s Rule as a corrective measure, we emphasize the need for fairness, transparency, and swift restoration of a democratic government. We hope that this intervention will serve as a stepping stone toward a better, safer, and more just Manipur—one where the rule of law prevails, where all communities coexist peacefully, and where governance is truly for the people.
