Imphal, Feb 25:
The Wakhallol Mannaba Apunba (WAMA) Kangleipak has announced a significant initiative aimed at expanding and standardizing the Manipuri language for official and academic use. As part of this effort, a “Lexicon Committee” has been reconstituted under the Directorate of Language Planning & Implementation (DLPI), Government of Manipur, to enhance the development of the Manipuri language.
According to an order issued on February 18, 2025 (Order No. 1/10/2013_DLPI), the newly formed committee is tasked with revising and improving the existing Manipuri lexicon to align with contemporary linguistic and educational needs. The official launch of this initiative is scheduled to take place on March 1, 2025, at 11 AM, at the Conference Hall of the Adult Education Department, Babupara.
During the event, WAMA will formally present its recommendations and discuss strategies for implementing the revised lexicon. The Director of DLPI, L. Radhakanta, will attend the program, underscoring the importance of the initiative. WAMA emphasized that a previous Lexicon Committee was established in 2012-13, but due to various challenges, the development process faced setbacks. However, with renewed commitment and community involvement, WAMA has once again taken up the responsibility since 2023 to ensure the systematic expansion of the Manipuri language.
The committee aims to enrich the official Manipuri language vocabulary by incorporating diverse linguistic elements and ensuring that it meets modern communication and academic requirements. This initiative also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for the promotion of regional and indigenous languages. Additionally, the effort is expected to further support the recognition of Manipuri (Meetei) as a Classical Language of India in the near future.
WAMA has urged the public to extend their support for the successful execution of this language development initiative, emphasizing that the preservation and growth of the Manipuri language are essential for the cultural and educational progress of Manipur.
