Imphal, May 19: Armed assailants suspected to be cadres of NSCN-IM today ambushed a convoy of BSF who were on foot patrol at Melei Lampak Chingon under Heirok Police station in Thoubal district using rocket launchers and other sophisticated machine guns. Miraculously none of the BSF troopers sustained any injury in the deadly attack. Report said that the BSF troopers too retaliated and the gun fight continued for around 30 minutes. Later, additional security force of Thoubal Police Commando reinforced and the armed cadres reportedly fled the area.
The BSF personnel belong to the 54 Battalion, D Coy posted at Chingdompok of Heirok in Thoubal district.
Reporters who rushed the encounter spot found 3 big holes probably dug out by the rocket blasts.
Late, combined security troop conducted massive search operation at the area. Commanding Officer of the 54 Battalion BSF personally came to the spot and inspected the site.
The ambushed site, Melei Lampak is located in between Kourangthel of Chandel district and Heirok of Thoubal district. Earlier, about a month back cadres of NSCN-IM had assaulted some of the person working at a Tourist spot being constructed at the area claiming it to be their land. The cadres also reportedly fired several round of gunshots.
