Manipur Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team returns with National glory

The Manipur Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team received a warm reception at Imphal International Airport today on their return after securing the First Runners-Up title in the 9th National Wheelchair Basketball Championship for Men and Women held from September 1 to 10 at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Training Disability Sports Centre, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The championship was organised by the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India.
A contingent of eight players and three officials from Manipur took part in the championship. They were heartily welcomed at the airport by members of the Manipur Wheelchair Basketball Association, Director of IPR Ng. Uttam, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Dhaneshor, and well-wishers. Overwhelmed with joy, the players and officials were honoured with gifts and garlands.
State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, W. Birahari, in his congratulatory message, highlighted that despite limited facilities and budgetary constraints, Manipur’s women wheelchair players have showcased remarkable performance on the national stage. He further noted that many individuals with disabilities in the state still lack opportunities and support, urging stronger government intervention to create inclusive platforms.
Speaking to the media, team captain Chakpram Lokeshori expressed that inadequate infrastructure and shortage of equipment continue to pose challenges for players. She appealed for better support, stressing that improved facilities would encourage more talented persons with disabilities to take up sports. She added that the team’s latest achievement would serve as an inspiration for many and motivate them to pursue greater success in future competitions.
