Imphal, Dec 8:
A team from INDIA Bloc Manipur, led by Hareshwar Goswami, Vice President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), left for New Delhi today to participate in a planned protest at Jantar Mantar on December 9, 2024. The protest is organized in response to the ongoing crisis in Manipur, with the aim of calling for urgent intervention and the restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.
K. Meghachandra, the President of MPCC, had earlier appealed to the public via social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), urging citizens to join the peaceful sit-in demonstration, scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM at Jantar Mantar. Meghachandra emphasized the dire situation in Manipur, where escalating violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities has led to widespread displacement, loss of life, and devastation. The protest is intended to raise awareness and push for immediate government action to resolve the crisis.
However, the path to Jantar Mantar has been fraught with challenges. On December 6, 2024, MPCC President Meghachandra revealed that the INDIA Bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, had been denied permission for a protest at Jantar Mantar. This refusal has sparked concerns about the transparency of the decision-making process and has raised questions about whether the government is suppressing peaceful dissent or failing to acknowledge the urgency of the situation in Manipur.
The denial of permission has led to widespread criticism, with many questioning the government’s commitment to allowing peaceful protests and whether it is willing to address the deepening crisis in the state. Despite this setback, Meghachandra remains resolute, asserting that such demonstrations are crucial to demand a political solution, engage in dialogue, and secure justice for the affected communities. The need for political intervention from both the state and central governments remains central to resolving the conflict and preventing further violence.
As Manipur’s crisis continues to escalate, the protest at Jantar Mantar is seen as a vital step in drawing national attention to the issue. The demonstration is expected to play a key role in pressuring both the state and central governments to take concrete actions that address the core grievances and pave the way for peace in the region.
