Imphal, Dec 7:
Surgeons at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) have successfully conducted heart surgeries on 12 children suffering from congenital heart diseases between June and December 2024, in collaboration with renowned global medical institutions. A statement from RIMS confirmed the achievement, noting that a series of free heart surgeries for children under 18 was initiated in June 2024.
According to the RIMS statement, a recent camp, held from December 2 to 4, 2024, at the North-East Regional Paediatric Cardiothoracic Centre at RIMS, was organized by the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Unit in partnership with Healing Little Hearts, UK. During the camp, three specialists from Healing Little Hearts—Dr. Shyamadeep Borgohain, Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon; Dr. Snehal M. Kulkarni, Paediatric Cardiologist and Intensivist; and Dr. Shivaji Mali, Cardiac Anaesthetist from Fortis Hospital, Mumbai—screened children with heart conditions.
Five children underwent surgeries during the camp, including three with complex congenital heart diseases who required open-heart surgery. The entire treatment and investigative process was provided free of charge, supported by the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) under the National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur.
Authorities have encouraged children under 18 in need of cardiac surgery to take advantage of this program. Gratitude was expressed to Dr. Sanjiv Nichani, Founder and Lead Intensivist of Healing Little Hearts, UK, the entire team from Healing Little Hearts, and all the medical staff and volunteers whose efforts contributed to the success of these surgeries. Special recognition was given to RBSK NHM Manipur for funding the treatment and establishing the state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Operation Theatre at RIMS.
