The 2nd edition of the Indigenous Naga Wrestling Championship-2024, organized by the Indian Army under the aegis of the Spear Corps, concluded with resounding success on 6th December 2024 at Senapati district of Manipur. The championship witnessed an enthusiastic participation from 70 wrestlers aged between 10 to 20 years in three weight categories, under 55kg, 55kg to 65kg and 65kg & above. The event has been organised to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Naga community while fostering unity and sportsmanship among the youth.
Over three days, the championship showcased intense competition and impressive skills displayed by the young participants. The audience, including locals and dignitaries, cheered enthusiastically as wrestlers battled for victory in a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect. The event served as a platform to nurture local talent in indigenous wrestling and reinforced the importance of preserving traditional sports in the region.
Master Adavio won the gold medal in under 55kg weight category while the silver was bagged by Master Avahrai. Master PJ Pavei won the gold in 55kg – 65kg weight category and Master Veikho won the silver. In 65kg and above weight category, Master Hrikhelou won the gold and silver was won by Master S. Vilah. Winners in each category were felicitated with cash prizes, medals, and certificates in a grand closing ceremony.
The Indian Army’s initiative to organize this championship has been widely lauded by the local community. It underscored the Army’s commitment in promoting cultural and sporting traditions while building strong ties with the people of Manipur.
