KCP (PWG) pays tribute to theatre maestro Ratan Thiyam

The Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) – MC Unification has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned theatre director and cultural icon Ratan Thiyam, who passed away on July 23. In a press release issued by its Public Relations Officer, Chingkheingamba, the party paid heartfelt tribute to the globally acclaimed playwright, describing his death as an irreparable loss not only for Manipur but for the entire theatre community of India and beyond.
The statement highlighted Ratan Thiyam’s monumental contributions in elevating Manipuri theatre to the global stage, including the prestigious Padma Shri award conferred upon him by the Government of India. His works, deeply rooted in the ethos of Manipuri identity, were celebrated both nationally and internationally for their philosophical depth and cultural richness.
KCP (PWG) underscored that Ratan Thiyam was not merely a director but a visionary who used theatre as a medium for social introspection and national awakening. The party lamented that despite his stature, Thiyam did not receive the institutional recognition and support from India’s cultural establishments that his genius deserved. The party stated this neglect as part of the larger cultural alienation faced by Manipur.
