As part of its Swachhata Action Plan (SAP), the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in collaboration with the Manipur Adventure and Mountain Biking Association (MAAMBA) and other cycling associations, organised a bicycle rally on Wednesday to commemorate World Bicycle Day 2026 under the theme, “Cycling for a Greener Future.”
The rally was aimed at promoting cycling as a healthy, affordable and environmentally sustainable mode of transport while encouraging public participation in building a cleaner and greener society.
The event was flagged off from the Jubilee Hall premises of RIMS by Director of RIMS, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, in the presence of Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, who also participated in the rally alongside the cyclists.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma highlighted the importance of cycling in improving physical health and reducing environmental pollution.
The rally commenced from Jubilee Hall and passed through Uripok, Iroisemba, Lamsang, Heibongpokpi, Lairenkabi and Phayeng before concluding. Around 320 cyclists, including faculty members, staff, students and cycling enthusiasts from different parts of the state, participated in the event.
Renowned Manipuri actress Soma Laishram also joined the programme and encouraged people to incorporate cycling into their daily lives. She stressed the importance of reducing environmental pollution through greater use of bicycles and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
Meanwhile, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma inaugurated an AMRIT Pharmacy at the New Maternity Block of RIMS. The newly established facility is expected to improve access to essential medicines, ensure timely availability of drugs, strengthen emergency response services and enhance maternal and neonatal healthcare at the institute.
