Free Blood Scheme launched for Cancer Patients at RIMS

The Department of Transfusion Medicine, RIMS, Imphal, in collaboration with Helping Hands for People, Manipur, has launched a special initiative to provide free blood to inpatients of the Radiation Oncology Department throughout October 2025.
As part of this initiative, Helping Hands for People, Manipur, organized a two-day blood donation camp on September 21 and 24, during which 116 units of blood were collected. These units have been earmarked exclusively for cancer patients, who will now receive the required blood free of cost and without any replacement obligation from their families.
The program, initiated on a trial basis, is being conducted under a mutual agreement between Helping Hands for People and the Department of Transfusion Medicine, RIMS. All blood will be supplied entirely from voluntary donations, relieving patients’ families of the burden of arranging donors.
Dr. A. Barindra Sharma, Professor of the Department of Transfusion Medicine, RIMS, said that in connection with National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, the scheme has been launched to ensure uninterrupted access to blood for cancer patients throughout the month. He added that the blood units will be arranged solely through voluntary donations coordinated by Helping Hands for People, Manipur, in collaboration with the department.
The Department and Helping Hands for People have urged patients to take full advantage of the scheme. They also expressed plans to expand the program to include outpatients in the future and appealed to the public to participate in blood donation, describing it as a noble act of service to humanity.
