Breaking new ground in Genetic Science: Dr. Khanchuila Shingnaisui shines as a Trailblazer from Manipur

Special  Correspondent
Ukhrul, August 8:

In an inspiring stride for scientific research and women empowerment in the Northeast, Dr. Khanchuila Shingnaisui, daughter of Qlr. Wungshungphi and Qr. George Shingnaisui, has successfully earned her Ph.D. in Genetics from the prestigious University of Delhi, South Campus. Her groundbreaking doctoral thesis, titled “Functional characterization of small parvulin, Pin4, in Dictyostelium discoideum”, opens new avenues in the study of cellular biology and developmental processes.
Hailing from Hunpun/Ukhrul Manipur, Dr. Shingnaisui’s journey is a testament to dedication, brilliance, and the unrelenting pursuit of academic excellence. With a strong foundation in life sciences, she completed her B.Sc. in Life Sciences from Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi University, in 2013, followed by a Master’s in Zoology from Hindu College. Her academic achievements were marked early on, securing a Merit Award from Tangkhul Katamnao Long Delhi (TKLD) and clearing both UGC and CSIR-NET JRF exams.
Her research career has been no less illustrious. She began as a Junior Research Fellow at CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, Assam in 2017, and later continued her journey at the Department of Genetics, DU, where she held positions as Junior and Senior Research Fellow, and most recently as a Project Associate-I (2023–2025). Her work focused on the role of prolyl isomerization in developmental processes, using Dictyostelium discoideum, a soil-dwelling amoeba, as a model organism. This rare model system has contributed significantly to understanding human diseases and cellular development.
Dr. Shingnaisui has also made remarkable contributions to the academic world through research publications. Her latest submission, co-authored with Dr. A. Naorem, is under review in the International Journal of Developmental Biology. She has published in reputed journals such as the Journal of Soil and Crops and Journal of Ethnopharmacology, with notable work on the medicinal plant Houttuynia cordata.
In recognition of her scientific acumen, she was awarded a travel grant by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to present her work at the 2024 International Dictyostelium Conference in the USA—an acknowledgment of her growing influence in the global scientific community.
Dr. Khanchuila Shingnaisui stands as a proud symbol of perseverance, intellect, and the rising spirit of Tangkhul women in science.
