Imphal, Aug 6:
The Indo-Japan Friendship Association Manipur organized the 79th Hiroshima Day 2024 at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
During the event, MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha spoke about the historical significance of the day, recalling that during the Second World War, Japanese soldiers entered Manipur, with many perishing in Kameng Khunjao within the Lamlai Assembly constituency. Each year, the descendants of these soldiers visit to pay floral tributes and hold memorial services.
MLA Ibomcha highlighted the devastating impact of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World War II. On August 6, 1945, when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, many people lost their lives by the end of that year. The bombing serves as a grim reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare and its long-lasting effects. The war resulted in large-scale casualties and destruction.
He expressed a heartfelt appeal that such tragedies should never occur again, drawing a parallel to the suffering of internally displaced persons at the Akampat relief camp and traumatized students from nearby schools.
The function was attended by Kh. Ibomcha, MLA of Lamlai AC; Professor Th. Ratankumar, former Head of the English Department at Manipur University; and Saratchand Thiyam, Sahitya Akademi Awardee, serving as Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, and President respectively.
