Imphal, Aug 20:
Today, the Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Manipur conducted an inspection at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Complex in Lamphelpat, which has been experiencing recurrent flooding even with minimal rainfall. This marks the third instance of such flooding at the campus, raising significant concerns about the infrastructure and the safety of the students.
The inspection revealed that the ongoing construction work around the water bodies near the campus is a key contributor to the flooding. The waterlogging has severely affected the institution’s functionality, with laboratories and classrooms inundated, leading to a complete disruption of electricity supply.
Students of NIT Manipur had earlier reported the issue to the Members of Parliament from Manipur, Bimol Akoijam, MP of Inner Manipur, and Alfred Kangam, MP of Outer Manipur. Both MPs have been actively involved in addressing the students’ grievances, with Congress leaders, including K Meghachandra, also taking part in the inspection.
Popilal Ningthoujam, Youth Congress leader, expressed concern about the government’s awareness of the situation. He emphasized the need for the government to ensure that the construction projects in the area include proper drainage systems to prevent future flooding. “The government should take care of the projects it is undertaking so that water can flow out from the area,” stated Ningthoujam.
The NSUI has appealed to the government, highlighting the severe inconvenience faced by students due to the flooding. They urged the authorities to intervene and take immediate steps to resolve the issue, ensuring that the students can continue their education without further disruption.
