Manipur Language Day was observed today by various organizations, marking the 33rd anniversary of the inclusion of the Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Kangleipak Loinasillon Apunba Marup (KLAM) held a commemorative event at its head office in Singjamei Chirom Leikai, Imphal West. Keithalakpam Sanahongba, speaking at the event, urged writers to exclusively use the Manipuri language in their works, avoiding the inclusion of other languages. He emphasized the importance of thorough research to ensure the continued promotion and development of Manipuri, calling for unity among writers to maintain the purity of the language.
In his keynote address, N. Dabashwor Meitei praised Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba for his efforts to include Meetei Mayek on Indian currency notes issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He also acknowledged KLAM’s appreciation for the central government’s allocation of Rs 18 crore for the promotion of the Manipuri language and script.
The event was attended by Keithalakpam Sanahongba Mangang as the Chief Guest and Ngangom Norendrajit as the Guest of Honour.
The Writers’ Platform (WRITPLAT) Manipur also marked the occasion with a special event at the Palace Compound, in collaboration with the Jaideep Memorial Foundation (JAIM Foundation). The celebration featured the release of a new poetry anthology and a patriotic audio music track, both created by Dr. R.K. Nayansana Devi, President of the JAIM Foundation. The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Ksh. Subadani Devi, President of LEIKOL; Keisham Pradipkumar, Chairperson of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights; Yumnam Kumar, President of WRITPLAT and National Awardee; Dr. Hamon Nabachandra, Retired Professor; Dr. Kh. Chinglen Singh, Founder and Executive Officer of SEVA Manipur; and Dr. Rajkumari Nayansana Devi, Philanthropist and President of the Jaideep Memorial Foundation. The release of the anthology and song was seen as a tribute to Manipur’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage, reflecting the organizers’ dedication to preserving and promoting local traditions.
The Meetei Erol Eyek loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) also observed Manipur Language day at their head office.
Speaking on the occasion Kheidam Ingocha Meetei, President of MEELAL praised the efforts of both the people of Manipur and the broader Indian community for supporting the inclusion of Manipuri in the Eighth Schedule. He expressed disappointment over the lack of progress by the Language Department in advancing the Manipuri language, highlighting this as a significant shortcoming.
MEELAL also acknowledged the contributions of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba for their efforts to feature Meetei Mayek on Indian currency notes issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The organization welcomed the central government’s recent allocation of Rs 18 crore dedicated to promoting the Manipuri language, viewing it as a positive step toward enhancing linguistic and cultural recognition.
