Imphal, Sept 29:
A disturbing video circulating on social media features two youths, believed to have been kidnapped by suspected Kuki militants, urgently appealing for assistance from Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh. In the video, the captives plead for the government to recognize them as “sons” and to take action regarding the demands of their kidnappers, heightening concerns in the region.
The ordeal began on September 27, when three young men went missing around 3 PM while traveling to New Keithelmanbi for an SSC GD recruitment test. Their families reported losing contact, leading to frantic search efforts. Fortunately, one of the missing individuals, Ningombam Johnson Singh, was located and rescued by Army personnel stationed at Leimakhong. He was subsequently returned to his family after being handed over to Imphal West Police.
However, the search continues for the other two youths: Oinam Thoithoi Singh from Thoubal Leishangthem Awang Leikai and Thokchom Thoithoiba Singh from Thoubal Khekman Wangmataba Mayai Leikai. Their families are increasingly anxious, and the video has intensified their distress, as it appears to show the hostages in the custody of Kuki militants, who seem to be leveraging the footage to further their demands.
In response to the unfolding crisis, families and local residents have united to demand action. A public meeting took place at Thoubal Khekman Jila Keithel, leading to the formation of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) dedicated to addressing the situation. The JAC has submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal District, calling for urgent measures to ensure the safe return of the remaining captives.
Following this development, L. Subol, Convenor of the Peace and Relief Committee, engaged with the Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) to discuss potential rescue operations. As the urgency of the situation escalates, families continue to implore authorities for prompt intervention.
