A suspected Chinese-made hand grenade was lobbed at the gate of the residence of Haobam Rakesh (40), son of late Yaima, at Samgaiprou Mamang Leikai FCI Road under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West district in the early hours today.
Fortunately, the grenade failed to explode and no one was injured. Rakesh is reportedly engaged in the fish trade and operates a fish shop in the locality.
On being informed, a police team along with the Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to the spot and recovered the grenade at around 6.10 am. During examination, bomb disposal experts found that the grenade’s safety lever was lying separately, indicating that an attempt had been made to trigger the explosion, but the device failed to detonate.
The grenade was later taken to the designated dumping site at Lamphel, where it was safely destroyed at around 1 pm, police sources said. An investigation has been initiated to identify those responsible for the attack and ascertain the motive behind the incident.
