Guwahati, Nov 4:
At the conclusion of the Thadou Convention 2024 in Guwahati on November 2, the Thadou community expressed a conditional endorsement for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, should the Government of India initiate such an exercise. The community conveyed that they believe the NRC could serve national interests and protect the rights and welfare of Indian citizens and indigenous communities. The Thadou leadership acknowledged the state government’s ongoing efforts to address public concerns and secure the well-being of its citizens.
However, the Thadou community underscored that, to ensure a fair process, government authorities should proactively address potential concerns surrounding document verification, especially for tribal populations. They highlighted that tribal communities may often lack conventional records or documentation, which could hinder their recognition under the NRC framework. The community emphasized that resolving these concerns before implementing the NRC would be critical to prevent any unintended consequences for legitimate citizens of Manipur.
The Thadou community also pointed to the pressing issue of drug abuse in Manipur, which affects multiple communities across the state. They reiterated their support for the Government of Manipur’s “War on Drugs” campaign, advocating for greater community involvement and strategic planning to maximize its socio-economic and environmental impact. They encouraged all stakeholders to work together to strengthen these initiatives for a stable and prosperous future for Manipur and its people.
