Imphal, Nov 30:
Intense protests erupted at the Leimakhong Army Camp of the 57th Mountain Division after Kamalbabu Laishram, a supervisor in the Military Engineering Cell, reportedly disappeared from the camp premises under suspicious circumstances. Kamalbabu has been missing since November 25, sparking outrage and allegations from his family and community.
According to his wife, Laishram Ongbi Koijam Bela Rani, Kamalbabu entered the army camp on the day of his disappearance, as evidenced by records of his entry. However, there is no corresponding record of his exit, raising questions about his fate. “I was informed in the evening that my husband had disappeared. His phone was switched off. I want my husband alive, and the army must take responsibility for finding him. He went missing within their campus, and it is their duty to ensure his safe return,” Bela Rani said, holding back tears as she joined the protesters demanding answers.
The protestors gathered outside the camp, chanting slogans like “57th Mountain Division, down down!” and “We want Kamalbabu alive!” The demonstrations have grown in intensity, with supporters accusing the army of negligence and even foul play. The case has now escalated, with a High Court petition filed to press for immediate action.
The lack of clarity surrounding Kamalbabu’s disappearance has led to a surge of anger in Manipur, particularly among the Meitei community. Protesters claim the army’s silence is deepening suspicions of wrongdoing. “If he went missing within the army camp, the military must provide answers. This is a matter of justice and accountability,” one protester said.
The army has yet to release an official statement on the incident, further fueling public outrage. As tensions rise, all eyes are on the High Court proceedings, where the family hopes for intervention to secure Kamalbabu’s safe return. The protests are expected to continue until the military provides concrete answers regarding his disappearance.
