Imphal, Nov 30:

Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated the infrastructure construction for relocating the Assam Rifles camp from the premises of the historic Langthabal Old Palace, marking a significant step in preserving Manipur’s cultural and historical heritage. The event, organized by the Department of Art and Culture, fulfilled a long-standing demand by citizens and student unions for the removal of the camp from the palace grounds, located within the Manipur University campus at Canchipur.
The Assam Rifles camp will now be shifted to an adjacent area, paving the way for the conservation of the Langthabal Palace, a site of immense historical significance that once served as a summer residence for Maharaj following the era of Kangla. Speaking on the occasion, CM Biren Singh expressed his gratitude to the Assam Rifles and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for facilitating the move. “This is a historic moment for the people of Manipur. Resolving this long-standing issue reflects our renewed commitment to preserving our cultural heritage,” he remarked.
Biren Singh acknowledged delays in addressing the matter, citing past communication gaps between the state government and the Assam Rifles. He lauded the Assam Rifles for their cooperation in vacating the premises, which include historic structures, and emphasized the importance of the site in Manipur’s civilizational history.
Professor W Chandbabu, Registrar of Manipur University, highlighted the emotional and cultural significance of Langthabal Palace, stating, “This hillock is a vital part of Manipur’s history. Shifting the Assam Rifles post will not only preserve this heritage but also strengthen the emotional bond of society with the palace.”
Meanwhile, CM Biren Singh addressed criticism from the Mizo National Front (MNF), dismissing their demands for his resignation. He called for maturity in political discourse and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of a missing individual from an army camp, calling the incident “very unfortunate.”
The relocation is seen as a milestone in balancing heritage conservation with security needs, offering renewed hope for preserving Manipur’s rich history.
