Imphal, Sept 9:
The newly elected president of the United Committee Manipur (UCM), YK Dhiren, has accused the Government of India of orchestrating a plan to distort the integrity of Manipur, amid the ongoing crisis in the state. Dhiren made this statement after taking his oath of office at the temple of Lord Sanamahi at Haying Khongbal, alongside 24 other newly elected office bearers who will serve from 2024 to 2027.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Dhiren emphasized that the UCM was established with the primary mission of safeguarding the integrity of Manipur. He expressed concern that the central government has repeatedly tried to undermine the state’s territorial and cultural unity, a challenge that the UCM is determined to resist. “Any attempt to distort Manipur’s integrity will be fought by the indigenous communities,” Dhiren declared, reiterating the organization’s commitment to protecting the state’s sovereignty.
The new UCM leadership includes key figures such as Khuraijam Athouba, who was elected vice president, Shanta Nahakpam as general secretary, Dipanjit Ningthoujam as secretary of organization, S. Brojen Singh as secretary of finance, Soibam Anil as secretary of information and public relations, and I. Bimola as secretary of women affairs. These leaders represent various organizations that are part of the UCM coalition, with YK Dhiren representing the United Peoples’ Front (UPF), and other office bearers coming from groups such as IPSA, ACOAM Lup, NIPCO, PANDM, and Kanglamei.
Dhiren’s remarks come at a time when Manipur continues to experience violence and unrest, with the ongoing ethnic conflict claiming over 250 lives and displacing thousands. The UCM has been vocal about its opposition to any political or territorial reorganization that might threaten the state’s integrity, particularly amid rumors of external aggression and insurgency in the region.
