Imagi Meira expresses dismay over arrest of armed group cadres

Imphal, Mar 18:

The civil society organization Imagi Meira has voiced its loss of faith in both the Central and state governments following the recent arrest of three cadres belonging to an armed group that had entered into a peace deal with the government. L. Shachirani, Advisor of Imagi Meira, expressed concerns over the implications of such arrests, particularly questioning the fate of village defenders who have been safeguarding their communities amidst the ongoing crisis.
“If the government can arrest members of armed groups that have signed peace agreements at any time, what assurance do we have for the safety of village defenders who have been protecting their communities since the onset of the crisis?” Shachirani posed this question to reporters during a press briefing.
The organization highlighted the discontent among 10 MLAs demanding a separate administration, reacting strongly to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s recent statement regarding ongoing dialogues with the MLAs. Imagi Meira criticized the government for issuing election notifications before resolving the existing crisis, cautioning against political parties exploiting the situation for their own gains.
Furthermore, the advisor to Imagi Meira raised concerns about the directive by the District Commissioner (DC) for the submission of licensed firearms by the public. Shachirani questioned the rationale behind such a directive, particularly in light of ongoing attacks by heavily armed groups, such as the Kuki, targeting the Meiteis. She also criticized the apparent lack of measures by central forces to protect the populace.
Imagi Meira’s stance reflects growing apprehension and frustration among civil society organizations regarding the handling of security and governance issues in Manipur, urging authorities to address concerns and ensure the safety of all communities amidst the prevailing tensions.
