Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing today raised concerns in the Manipur Legislative Assembly over the continuing impact of the conflict on residents of Saikul and the wider Kangpokpi district, urging the government to improve essential services and support for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Speaking during the ongoing state Assembly session, Hangshing sought establishment of a Central government recruitment examination centre at Kangpokpi district headquarters, saying security concerns and travel difficulties had prevented many candidates from appearing in competitive examinations. She said a local centre would spare aspirants the need to travel to Ukhrul.
She also urged uninterrupted supplies of food, medicines and fuel, stating that Saikul residents had faced shortages of essential commodities and lifesaving medicines for more than three and a half months due to economic blockades and counter-blockades. She said fuel stations in Kangpokpi, particularly Saikul, had also remained closed.
Raising the condition of IDPs, Hangshing said relief camps in Churachandpur lacked adequate infrastructure, medical supplies and basic amenities. Overcrowding, she said, had created unhygienic conditions and inadequate privacy for women.
She urged increased financial assistance, improved camp facilities and expedited reconstruction of houses destroyed during the conflict to enable displaced families to return home.
