Women’s groups from different parts of Manipur continued their sit-in protest at Khoyathong on September 3, demanding that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise be completed before the Census.
The protesters also stepped up pressure on the government and elected representatives to take up the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the ongoing three-day Assembly session.
Speaking at the protest, Emagi Meira president Thockchom Sujata accused the State Government of failing to act responsibly on critical issues facing Manipur.
She alleged that the government moves on major public concerns only after sustained pressure and agitation, calling it a form of “irresponsible governance.”
Thockchom Sujata said the SoO agreement and the rehabilitation and resettlement of IDPs were too critical to be ignored by the Assembly. She urged legislators to address the issues through concrete decisions rather than allowing them to remain subjects of repeated public protests.
The protesters further demanded that the government and elected representatives respond proactively to the people’s concerns instead of waiting for sustained agitation to compel action.
The continuing protest comes as the Assembly debates issues linked to the prolonged conflict and the state’s fragile security and humanitarian situation.
