Imphal, July 19:
The hunger strike initiated by students of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) on July 9 concluded today, following the fulfillment of the demands raised by the student and alumni union by the state government. The strike, aimed at securing the appointment of key administrative positions, including a regular vice-chancellor, registrar, controller of examinations, and finance officers, saw significant progress with most positions now filled.
In a press briefing, T. Dijen, General Secretary of the Dhanamanjuri University Students’ Union, announced the cessation of the protest. “We are halting our hunger strike as most of our demands have been met,” T. Dijen stated, expressing gratitude to supporters and the state government for their swift action. However, the appointment of a vice-chancellor remains pending and is expected to take more time. T. Dijen voiced optimism about the future, hoping that DMU will soon be recognized as one of the premier institutions in the country.
The DMU Alumni Association also extended their gratitude to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Education Minister S. Rajen Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other authorities of DMU for their timely intervention, which they believe saved the university. They also congratulated the student organization for its success. The association appreciated Manipur University (MU) for allowing DMU students to obtain provisional admission in postgraduate programs at MU.
