Wangkhei Assembly Constituency MLA Thangjam Arunkumar has assured all possible support for developing Mekhalipara, identified as the place where Meiteis first settled in Tripura, as a historical site.
Arunkumar gave the assurance while attending the “Imalongi Kumhei” programme organised by the Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF), Manipur and Tripura, at Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala in connection with the 35th Manipuri Language Day celebration.
Speaking at the programme, Arunkumar said Mekhalipara, which is currently located within a tea garden, continues to bear the name associated with the early settlement of Meiteis in Tripura. He said developing the site would help preserve its historical significance and enable future generations to learn about the Meitei community’s roots in Tripura.
The MLA also called for greater efforts to strengthen the cultural and literary ties between Manipur and Tripura, pointing to the long-standing historical relationship between the two regions.
He referred to historical links between the royal houses of Manipur and Tripura and the association of Manipuri Ras Lila with Tripura. He said the performance of Manipuri Ras Lila in Tripura in 1798 was among the historical connections that reflected the close cultural relationship between the two regions.
Arunkumar further appreciated the efforts of Meitei artistes and cultural organisations in Tripura to preserve Manipuri language, Meitei Mayek, literature, dance and music.
The programme featured Manipuri dance, Pung Cholom, songs and a musical concert by artistes from Tripura. A poetry book titled Ahingba Mitam, written by Moirangthem Rajkumar, was also released.
The cultural segment included Lai Haraoba by Dr Sudhesana of Anoy Academy, Palem Panthou by Baishali of Ninad Cultural Academy and “Rhythms of Manipuri Music”, choreographed by Leina Takhellambam of Takhel Dance Academy. A Pung Cholom performance and musical concert by artistes from Tripura were also presented.
