A delegation of students from World Maritime Universities of various nationalities led by faculty Dr. Anish Hebbar visited Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters Mumbai as part of their field visit to India, on Monday.
The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity building.
Graduates from WMU have held prominent appointments in Maritime sectors, Coast Guards and Maritime Administration including United Nation’s IMO, the law making body in Maritime sector.
The visit of the students was aimed at providing insight into Maritime Affairs including Flag state, Coastal State and Port state functions. The visit aimed atproviding introduction to Maritime Safety, sea farer’s training, Maritime law and domestic implementation, environment protection and Maritime Administration.
During their visit to the Indian Coast Guard units at Mumbai, the students were briefed on Pollution Response and Marine Environment protection endeavors with hands on experience onboard Pollution Control Vessel, “ICGS Samudra Prahari”. They were also briefed on role and functions of the Indian Coast Guard. They were provided the insights into Maritime Search and Rescue Operations at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, which coordinates the 4.6 million Sq km of Indian Search and Rescue region.
The students were provided exposure to Maritime best practices, case studies and Coastal State functions, bbesides highlighting “Atma Nirbhar” and the Security and Growth for all in the Region (SAGAR) , the initiatives of the Government of India.
