Dr. Guliver Potsangbam, Consultant Nephrologist, SHRI, shared Shija’s kidney transplant journey and screened a video marking 100 transplants. Testimonial speeches were given by the first transplant recipient, Shija and the first deceased donor recipient. Dr.Phanjaobam Lanajit Singh, Media Advisor for the All Manipur Kidney Transplant Association, congratulated Shija and highlighted post-transplant patients’ medication challenges.
As part of Shija’s commitment to patient welfare, SHRI launched the ‘Shija Kidney Care’ card, offering exclusive benefits to registered individuals. Those with chronic kidney disease and a history of renal transplants can register for the card. These benefits include a 20% concession on laboratory investigations, a 10% discount on radiology investigations and procedures, and up to a 10% discount on medicines. Dr. Palin Khundongbam, CMD of SHRI, discussed solutions for medication issues faced by chronic kidney disease patients and declared free medication for all dialysis patients.
Shija’s kidney transplant journey began when approval for kidney transplants was granted in April 2016, leading to the first living donor kidney transplant in August 2016. Subsequent milestones include the first ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplant in Northeast India on 26th October, 2021, and the first deceased donor transplant in Northeast India on 2nd August, 2023, achieved through meticulous planning and collaboration with organizations like MOHAN Foundation and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal. JNIMS and SHRI shared the kidneys of the deceased donor, demonstrating inter-institutional cooperation.
Shija’s commitment to maximizing the impact of each donated organ was demonstrated through cross-matching potential patients on the waiting list. With 109 kidney transplants completed to date, including 2 international transplants from Myanmar and 6 from Nagaland, each transplant represents a triumph of teamwork, resilience, and the human spirit. The hospital also extends financial support through schemes like CHMT, PMJAY, ANUDAAN, Transplant Help the Poor Foundation, and KETTO, benefitting numerous recipients.
Equipped with state-of-the-art dialysis technologies and 41 dialysis machines, SHRI offers comprehensive treatment for all kidney disorders. With a full-time nephrologist and urologist ensuring high-quality, patient-centric care, SHRI performs the highest number of hemodialyses with 120 dialysis per day in the entire Northeast region. To date, SHRI has provided 84,533 CMHT and 52,060 PMJAY dialysis sessions, demonstrating dedication to patient care.
The hospital has played a significant role in promoting Manipur as a medical tourism destination, recognized as a referral center for kidney transplants by the governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura.
Today, as SHRI celebrates this significant achievement, let it acknowledge that each transplant signifies more than just a medical procedure but a step forward in the institution’s mission to provide world-class healthcare to the people of Manipur and beyond.
