Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) and Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup (UNAL) have expressed profound grief over the passing of 20-year-old Leishangthem Leimachanu, a displaced survivor of the May 3, 2023 ethnic violence, who succumbed to eye cancer on June 30, 2025.
Leimachanu, originally from Dailli village in Kangpokpi district, had been living at the Lamboikhongnangkhong Relief Camp following her displacement during the ethnic conflict that swept through the state. In November 2023, she was diagnosed with eye cancer during a routine medical check-up.
Despite the immense challenges posed by her displacement and health condition, UAL and UNAL had extended consistent support to ensure she received medical care. With contributions from local well-wishers and the Manipuri Meitei community in the United Kingdom, she was taken to Guwahati for specialised treatment.
For nearly two years, Leimachanu bravely battled the illness. However, despite all efforts and continued care, she passed away on Sunday, leaving behind a poignant story of resilience and courage amidst adversity.
UAL and UNAL offered their heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and loved ones. They stated that Leimachanu’s unwavering strength and dignity throughout her ordeal would be remembered with deep respect and sorrow.
Her death marks a tragic chapter in the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by displaced persons in the state. May her soul rest in peace.
