The inaugural program of the clinical session for the four days foundation course on Palliative Medicine for medical officers was held today at the Conference Hall, Department of Radiation Oncology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. The session was jointly conducted by the State Non Communicable Disease Cell, Department of Radiation Oncology RIMS, Institute of Palliative Medicine Calicut (WHO Collaborating Centre), and Pediatric Cardiac Society of India, and organized by the National Program for Palliative Care, NHM Manipur, and the State NCD Cell.

Sobita Devi, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology, RIMS, Imphal, and Dr. Suresh Kumar, Director of the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut, a WHO Collaborating Centre, attended as Guests of Honour.
Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, highlighted the importance of palliative care for terminally ill patients with conditions like cancer and Alzheimer’s. He stressed the need for trained human resources despite RIMS’s readiness to establish a robust palliative care centre. Expanding training programs, increasing MD seats, and encouraging higher studies are essential to reducing patient travel and ensuring comprehensive care within the state. RIMS is dedicated to prioritizing palliative care in the region.
Dr. Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services, Manipur, also highlighted the importance of palliative care for critically ill and bedridden patients, including the elderly and those with stroke or cancer. He stressed community involvement, especially in remote areas, and the role of healthcare professionals in providing care both in institutions and at patients’ homes. Establishing a palliative care centre at RIMS and extending outreach services to underserved regions is essential for comprehensive and compassionate care.
The event was attended by other guests, medical professionals, healthcare providers, and staff and students of RIMS, Imphal.
