Churachandpur witnessed high drama today as hundreds of women staged a fierce protest outside the residence of MLA, Churachandpur Assembly Constituency LM Khaute, opposing his decision to join the Y Khemchand-led government. The demonstration, organised by the Vaiphei Women Association, quickly turned tense despite heavy security deployment in the area.
Protesters marched towards the legislator’s residence raising slogans and accusing him of betraying the trust of the community. As the crowd attempted to push past security barricades, a scuffle broke out between demonstrators and security personnel. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent them from entering the premises.
A spokesperson of the Vaiphei Women Association said the agitation was a direct response to Khaute’s decision to align with the government, calling it unacceptable to the community. The association demanded his immediate resignation and warned of intensified protests if their demand was ignored.
The protest unfolded against the backdrop of renewed violence in parts of the state. Fresh clashes erupted in Litan under Ukhrul district on Wednesday night, with exchanges of gunfire reported until early Thursday. Several houses were set on fire by unidentified miscreants despite the presence of security forces, heightening tension in the hill district.
The violence came within hours of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s visit to Jiribam, where he met representatives of the Kuk-Zo-Hmar communities. Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho reiterated the government’s appeal for restraint and peace.
