The Manipur International Youth Centre observed its 30th Foundation Day at the Manipur Press Club, Loktak Hall, on Thursday, with several civil society leaders and activists in attendance.
Ima Khangembam Anandi, Advisor of AMKIL and Macha Leima, Ima Thokchom Sujata, President of Imagi Meira (Ichagidamak), Islamuddin Wangmayum, Vice President of UMPC, Rinku Khumukcham and MK Saroj Khan, President of MIYC, attended as presidium members. Speakers stated that since its establishment on February 13, 1997, the organisation has worked towards the political emancipation of the people of Manipur and the restoration of what it described as the true spirit of democracy to ensure lasting peace and security in the state.
They recalled the organisation’s involvement in various movements, including support to Irom Sharmila’s protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, the Manipur Integrity Rally in New Delhi in 1997 and the UN Day Rally in Imphal in 1999.
The organisation outlined its activities, including awareness programmes on the United Nations system, human rights training, youth engagement initiatives and lectures on international relations. It informed that it has participated in several international and national events and plans to introduce UN information programmes for school students from this year.
Referring to the ongoing crisis in Manipur since May 3, 2023, MIYC resolved to launch a yearlong programme marking its 30 years under the theme “Rebuilding Manipur.” As part of the initiative, it announced a campaign titled “Know Your Nation,” under which volunteers would visit educational institutions and other establishments to promote awareness of Manipur’s political history.
The organisation also launched a monthly human rights programme and appealed to educational institutions to allocate at least two periods per week in the academic session 2026–27 to teach the history and national question of Manipur under the theme “Know Your Nation.”
