UCM observes Langban Heitha Leitha at Kekrupat

The United Committee Manipur (UCM) today observed the annual Langban Heitha Leitha ceremony (tribute paying ceremony to departed souls sacrifice for the cause of Manipur) at Kekrupat, Imphal, in remembrance of the martyrs who laid down their lives for the protection of Manipur’s integrity.
Speaking at the occasion, UCM President Y.K. Dhiren recalled that the ceremony has been observed since June 2001 as a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in defence of the state. He stated that the people of Manipur will continue to collectively honour the martyrs every year, as their sacrifices remain a guiding force in safeguarding the state’s unity and integrity.
Highlighting present challenges, he said that Manipur’s integrity continues to face threats from various forces, both within the state and outside. He pointed out that more than 34 to 35 organizations have come together to defend the state’s unity, while divisive forces are attempting to weaken it.
The UCM president also expressed serious concern over the activities of Chin-Kuki narco-terrorist groups, who have allegedly occupied lands in the state over the past two years. He alleged that the Government of India has failed to take effective action against them, while parallel administrations and militant groups continue to operate, undermining the rule of law.
He further noted that a “separate administration” has been functioning in the state for the past 7 to 8 years, openly challenging governance, collecting illegal taxes, and imposing restrictions. This, he said, has left the indigenous people vulnerable and displaced. He added that around 60,000 to 70,000 internally displaced persons are still living in relief camps under dire conditions.
Criticising both the Central and the state governments, he said that instead of finding a long-term political solution to the ongoing crisis, attention is being diverted towards events like the Sangai Festival. He warned that Manipur is facing its gravest crisis, and the absence of effective governance has left the people to defend themselves amid growing insecurity.
The UCM reiterated that the sacrifices of the martyrs will continue to inspire the people of Manipur to protect the state’s integrity against all odds.
