The eight-day Kang Festival, one of Manipur’s most significant religious and cultural celebrations, concluded on Friday with the observance of Kang Len, the return journey of the deities, as thousands of devotees gathered at temples and localities across the Imphal valley to participate in the traditional chariot-pulling ceremony.
Large crowds thronged the Palace Compound and the historic Shri Shri Bijoy Govinda Temple, where devotees pulled the elaborately decorated Kang (chariot) carrying the deities amid prayers, devotional songs and traditional rituals. The concluding ceremony was marked by an atmosphere of deep faith as worshippers offered prayers and sought blessings for peace, prosperity and well-being.
The ISKCON Temple at Airport Road also witnessed a large turnout of devotees. Hundreds of followers joined the Kang Chingba procession, chanting devotional hymns and singing kirtans as the chariot carrying the deities was pulled through the temple premises.
The spirit of the festival extended beyond the major temples, with Kang Len being observed in almost every leikai (locality) across the valley. Community members, including children and elders, participated in pulling smaller chariots, reflecting the enduring cultural and religious significance of the centuries-old tradition in Manipur.
The Kang Festival, celebrated over eight days, commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. The final day, known as Kang Len, marks the symbolic return of the deities to their abode and brings the festival to a close.
The festival in Manipur is distinguished by its unique local traditions, including performances of Manipuri Sankirtan, devotional music and dance, and the distribution of khechri (prasad) among devotees. These customs continue to strengthen the spirit of communal harmony, cultural heritage and collective devotion that have long been associated with the festival.
