Thoubal, Nov 20:
In a concerted effort to protect migratory birds arriving in Manipur during winter, the Thoubal Forest Division conducted an intensive drive to curb illegal bird hunting in wetlands and agricultural fields under its jurisdiction.
The operation was organized in response to the growing threat to migratory bird species such as the common pochard and other waterfowl that frequent the region during this season. Officials from the Thoubal Forest Division, led by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Dr. Leishangthem Jeeceelee and Range Officer Dineschandra Salam, joined forces with members of the Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee (WBCC), Manipur, to carry out the drive at Lilong Makha Leikai PHC and Lilong Mairelkhun.
The collaborative team, including staff from beat offices in Mayai Keithel, Yairipok, Ingourok, and Heirok, along with WBCC members, seized 13 snares and dismantled eight traps during the operation. These traps, set up by poachers, were designed to capture migratory birds illegally.
Range Officer Dineschandra Salam emphasized the importance of preserving wildlife, noting that such illegal activities violate the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. He also highlighted that the poaching of migratory birds disrupts ecological balance and deprives communities of their ecological and cultural heritage.
