Imphal, Nov 20:
Taragi Cheisu has called for a judicial inquiry into the recent Jakuradhor massacre, where six civilians including women and children were raped and killed, and raised serious concerns about the possible dereliction of duty by the Manipur police.
Aribam Noutuneshwari Devi, a prominent voice in the community, questioned the police’s response to the abduction case, highlighting the failure of authorities to act swiftly. “Immediately after the photos of the abducted individuals were shared on social media, we inquired with the police about the actions taken. High-profile officers reassured us that they were doing everything they could. However, the next day, the victims were found dead. This raises doubts about whether there has been a failure of duty on the part of the Manipur Police,” A. Noutuneshwari stated.
The case involves child victims, including an eight-year-old child who was subjected to multiple, documented sexual assaults, bringing it under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A. Noutuneshwari emphasized the urgency of the case, urging that either the Special Investigation Team (SIT) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) be tasked with the investigation. However, by law, “a Special Juvenile Police Officer should have been appointed in line with POCSO guidelines, but this has not been done,” she said. “Without proper documentation, we will not get justice.”
The massacre is now referred to as the “Jakuradhor Massacre” by Taragi Cheisu.
Khaidem Mani, a leader of Taragi Cheisu, echoed A. Noutuneshwari’s concerns and called for a comprehensive investigation into the massacre. “Simply having the NIA investigate is not enough. We need a thorough judicial inquiry. The incident should be classified as an act of terrorism, and the organizations involved must be declared unlawful. We also urge the Indian Women’s Commission and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to visit Jakuradhor in Jiribam, and a white paper should be produced to ensure transparency,” Mani asserted.
Additionally, Taragi Cheisu has strongly opposed the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station jurisdictions, calling for its immediate repeal. The group condemned the move and vowed to continue advocating for its withdrawal.
