Taragi Cheisu criticizes both State and Central government for failure to address ongoing crisis

Imphal, Nov 28:

Convenor of the Taragi Cheisu, Khaidem Mani, strongly criticized both the N. Biren Singh-led government in Manipur and the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their inability to resolve the ongoing crisis in the state. Speaking to the media, Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani expressed his concerns over the state’s governance, stating that there appears to be no effective leadership in place.
Mani emphasized that, according to the 7th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, it is the state’s responsibility to exercise its powers independently, with the Union government intervening only in exceptional cases to assist. He remarked that the current government’s approach, relying on curfews, internet bans, and school closures, reflects a failure to address the root causes of the crisis and safeguard the rights of the people.
“The government has completely failed in its duty to protect the lives and properties of the people. Our human rights and fundamental rights have been violated. The imposition of curfews and internet bans should be lifted, and other measures should be explored to handle any uprisings,” Khaidem Mani stated. He also criticized the use of internet bans, arguing that such measures are unjustified and ineffective in addressing issues like cybercrime, which should be handled by the relevant authorities.
Mani also spoke out against the continued closure of educational institutions, including schools and colleges, arguing that this violates Article 21(a) of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to education. “Closing schools and colleges due to the fear of agitation is akin to staying awake all night due to a nightmare,” he said, calling for the immediate reopening of educational institutions.
Further, Mani raised concerns about the disappearance of Kamalbabu, a member of the 57 Mountain Division, who went missing within an army cantonment. He called for serious attention to the matter, noting that such an incident within a military facility is a grave issue. “The General Officer Commanding (GOC) is answerable for the disappearance of this individual, and the GOC must issue a public clarification,” Mani demanded.
Mani was accompanied by retired judge Aribam Noutuneshwari Devi and retired IAS officer RK Nimai during the press briefing.
