Imphal, Nov 28:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra strongly criticized the government’s handling of the ongoing violence in Manipur, which has persisted for 19 months. Addressing reporters at Congress Bhavan this morning, Meghachandra questioned the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis, asking when it plans to end the unprecedented violence.
He stated that political parties, including the Congress, have repeatedly urged the government to convene meetings to address the issue at the state assembly, in parliament, and in public forums. However, these pleas have gone unheard. As a result, the Congress has decided to stage protests in New Delhi, with some members already en route to the capital.
Highlighting the worsening crime rate and governance failures, Meghachandra accused the government of neglecting its responsibilities, particularly toward the student community. He criticized the prolonged closure of schools and colleges, noting that such actions are unjustifiable when the state has a functioning government and sufficient security forces. Comparing the closures to those during the COVID-19 pandemic, he stressed that the current situation should not warrant similar measures and demanded the immediate reopening of educational institutions and restoration of internet services.
Meghachandra also condemned the persistent blockades on national highways, which have caused skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. He criticized both the government and various organizations for imposing bans, leaving citizens in a dire situation. “If this continues, they might as well stop our breathing too,” he remarked, highlighting the extreme distress faced by the people of Manipur.
He further called on the government to lift the curfews, reopen schools, and invite the Prime Minister to Manipur to address the crisis. Meghachandra expressed dismay at the lack of action, saying the government’s imposition of AFSPA and curfews, coupled with its failure to address human rights violations, has left citizens hopeless and unsafe.
State CPI(M) leader Ksh. Shanta also condemned the disappearance of Laishram Kamalbabu after entering an army camp at Leimakhong. He accused the government of turning a blind eye to the state’s tragic situation. Shanta reiterated that the INDIA Bloc would stage protests in New Delhi, while its MPs would raise the Manipur issue inside parliament to demand accountability and action from the government.
Both leaders emphasized the urgency of restoring normalcy in Manipur, protecting human rights, and ensuring the safety and security of the state’s citizens.
