Sit-in protest demanding repeal of AFSPA, Justice for murder of women and children

Jiribam, Nov 28:

The Jiri United Committee (JUC), Jiribam held a significant sit-in protest today outside the Congress Bhavan in Jiribam, drawing attention to the tragic murder of six women and children and two men allegedly committed by Kuki-Zo Hmar militants on November 11. The demonstration aimed to voice the community’s outrage over these brutal acts of violence and to call for the immediate repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Manipur.
Demonstrators gathered with placards bearing powerful messages such as “We want Justice,” “The Central Government must not divide Manipur,” and “Declare Hmar Village Volunteers as terrorists.”
This protest is part of a broader, ongoing agitation by the Jiri United Committee, which seeks justice for the victims and their families. The recent killings have sparked widespread condemnation, and community leaders have emphasized the need for government intervention to protect the rights and safety of civilians in Manipur.
The JUC has consistently rallied against the violence perpetrated by Kuki militants, particularly following the killings of eight individuals from the Borobekra Sub Division of Jiribam District . The committee’s leaders argue that the re-imposition of AFSPA has exacerbated tensions and hindered peace efforts in the region. They are calling for a reassessment of this controversial legislation, which grants sweeping powers to the military and has been criticized for contributing to human rights violations.
As the protest continued, participants expressed their determination to seek justice and ensure that such tragedies do not recur. The Jiri United Committee has pledged to maintain pressure on local and national authorities until their demands are met, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive response to the ongoing violence and instability in Manipur.
