Students rubbish Registrar’s clarification, says if MU can conduct exams why not DMU

Imphal, July 15:

Dhanamanjuri University students have rubbished the clarification issued by registrar Nivedita Lairenlakpam saying that the university authority cannot invoke law and order situation of the state as the reason behind not conducting the examination given that examinations have been already conducted in Manipur University and other higher education institutes.
Responding to the allegation raised by the students and the concerns raised by the communities at large, registrar Nivedita Lairenlakpam has issued a clarification yesterday stating that the university had conducted online examination in 2023 for certain semesters in view of the then prevailing law and order scenario in the State. However, “online examination is however not the standard norm for assessing students…, in view of the current demand of the students for holding semester examinations in online mode, the approval to conduct examination on online mode has been sought from UGC and reply is awaited.”
The complaint submitted by the student to NHRC has contradicted the registrar’s claim that students have demanded for an online exam. The complaint writes: “It is to note that the Manipur University which is situated just a few kilometers from Dhanamanjuri University has already started conducting 2nd and 4th semester examinations of MA, MSc and LLM and these examinations are to be completed soon.”
So, they have argued if Manipur University can hold examinations then why can’t Dhanamanjuri University.
T. Dijen, General Secretary of DMSU, remarked, “The registrar’s notification is misleading. Initially, we demanded online examinations due to Manipur’s law and order situation, but Manipur University has since conducted examinations in both online and offline modes.”
He further highlighted concerns about sixth-semester examinations, stating, “She claims exams will be held by the end of this month for the sixth semester. However, students cannot secure admissions elsewhere because their documents cannot be verified. Even if exams are conducted, results for previous semesters have yet to be declared, rendering this solution inadequate.”
Regarding the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor, the DMSU General Secretary questioned, “It’s been a year. What were they doing? It was only after extensive protests that they finally issued a notification for the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment.”
Lastly, he raised the issue of the registrar’s presence at the university, asking, “How often has she visited the university?”
