Jiribam/ Heirok, Nov 4:

A solemn (Shraddha) ritual ceremony was held today for Oinam Babu, alias Gulu, a self-styled captain of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who lost his life in a gunfight on October 23, at Jiribam and Heirok.
The conflict occurred near Indo-Myanmar Border Pillar No. 72 at Laijang village in Chandel district, where Gulu clashed with forces from the Kuki National Front (B) and the People’s Defence Force (PDF).
During the clash, Captain Gulu sacrificed his life in the line of duty while defending his motherland.
Residents of his native village, Kadamtala in Jiribam, came together in large numbers to pay their respects during the ceremony. This heartfelt gathering was organized collaboratively by Gulu’s family members, local Meira Paibee groups, and several organizations, including the All Jiribam United Clubs Association (AJUCA), the All Jiribam Meira Paibi (AJMP), AMAWOVA , JIMET, and the Manipuri Students Federation (MSF).
The ceremony adhered to the traditional customs of Manipuri Vaishnavism, reflecting the deep cultural roots and spiritual beliefs of the community. Attendees from various parts of Jiribam came to offer floral tributes, demonstrating the significant impact Gulu had on those around him.
The ritual ceremony of the Late PLA Major was also held at the sacred site of Umang Laikol in Heirok Part-I, in Thoubal District.
At the beginning of the Lanna Thouram ceremony, traditional Meitei songs were performed, followed by the accompaniment of drum and gong music, with various community groups singing and performing under the guidance of Major Oinam Babu Meitei, also known as Gulu.
The event was made more memorable with a display of Major Oinam Babu Meitei’s photo, honoring his contributions and allowing everyone to pay their respects.
