Imphal, April 23:
In a stark departure from the tumultuous scenes witnessed during the initial polling on April 19, 2024, re-polling at 11 designated booths for the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency concluded smoothly today.
Candidates from all political parties diligently inspected the polling stations located at Moirangkampu Sajeb and Thongam Leikai in the Khurai constituency, four stations in Kshetrigao, and one in Thongju within the Imphal East district. Additionally, re-polling was conducted at three stations in Uripok and one in Konthoujam, both situated in the Imphal West district.
Manipur, which has been grappling with instances of violence, intimidation, and disruptions to the electoral process, particularly witnessed during the Lok Sabha elections on Friday, experienced a day of peaceful re-polling. The earlier incidents included reports of firing, intimidation tactics, destruction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and allegations of booth capturing at various polling stations across the state.
Despite the past disruptions, voter turnout surged significantly in almost all the polling stations, with figures reaching over 85% in some areas by 4 pm. This robust participation underscores the electorate’s commitment to exercising their democratic right amidst challenging circumstances.
To ensure a peaceful election, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur has implemented stringent security measures across all polling stations. Heavy deployments of state police and Para Military forces were observed at the sites where re-polling was conducted today. Additionally, bulletproof vehicles were prominently positioned at nearly every polling station.
