Poultry farmers suffer as economic blockade continues: Manipur Poultry Development Association urges exemption for feed

Imphal, Nov 10:

The Manipur Poultry Development Association held a press meet today at 11:30 a.m. at the Press Club, highlighting the severe challenges facing poultry farmers due to the ongoing economic blockade imposed by the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO). General Secretary Durbatara Khaba spoke at length about the toll the blockade has taken on the poultry industry, with the situation worsening after a recent bandh enforced by the Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO).
Dhurbatara Khaba explained that the blockade has completely cut off access to essential supplies, particularly poultry feed, leading to the starvation of poultry animals. “We are helplessly watching our poultry animals die from hunger. This is sheer torture,” he stated emotionally, urging those behind the blockade to spare poultry feed from the restrictions to prevent further loss of livestock.
The Association reported that many poultry animals have already perished and others are at risk of contracting diseases due to malnutrition, which could potentially create a health crisis in the sector.
Durbatara Khaba also pointed out that the frequent bandhs and blockades in the region discourage people from engaging in poultry farming, further stunting the industry’s growth. “The blockade has left us with no choice but to let these animals suffer,” he said. “There’s no effort being made to negotiate with us, and without relief, the losses will be immense.”
The Association has appealed for an exemption of poultry feed from the current blockade to prevent further suffering among livestock, noting that without urgent intervention, the future of Manipur’s poultry industry remains uncertain.
