Imphal, Nov 10:
The farmers’ wing of COCOMI condemned the recent killing of a farmer, Sapam Sofia, by alleged narco-terrorists, criticizing the Border Security Force (BSF) for failing to prevent the tragedy despite prior warnings. During a press briefing at the Imphal Press Club, COCOMI representatives revealed that Sofia, a farmer from Kumbi, was fatally shot just 200 meters from a BSF post, even after farmers had notified the BSF about their timing and location to ensure safety.
COCOMI representatives highlighted security lapses by the BSF, alleging that the force’s presence has proven ineffective in protecting civilians. “These incidents are designed to terrorize farmers, and we have been urging for more effective protection since the start of the conflict last year,” a spokesperson stated. They noted that a government monitoring committee had been established but has also failed to provide real security.
The organization cited recent attacks in areas like Naransena and Phubala, attributing repeated failures to the central security forces, and declared they have lost trust in the BSF’s ability to secure the region. COCOMI’s farmers’ wing called for the withdrawal of central security forces, affirming that local communities must now look to their own protection.
