Lt. General Konsam Himalay Singh (Retd.), a member of the consultative committee for the Manipur government, stressed that political dialogue is essential to overcoming the challenges in the conflict-ridden state. He highlighted that addressing governance issues and ensuring fairness must be the primary focus in tackling the ongoing crisis.
Speaking at a symposium in Kolkata, Himalay Singh emphasized that “political dialogue” is the key to moving forward, along with mutual accommodation through give and take. “Resolving matters requires political understanding, as military solutions have proven ineffective,” said Singh, who led the battalion that successfully reclaimed Point 5770 during the 1999 Kargil war.
Himalay Singh, who also serves on the peace committee working to foster harmony among Manipur’s ethnic groups, noted that the region’s many tribes, each with its unique aspirations, present a considerable challenge. “The north-east is home to over 187 tribes and 242 languages and dialects, each with their own aspirations,” he explained, adding, “This diversity poses a significant challenge to the Indian Constitution.” He emphasized that while the Constitution addresses the needs of all, it does not cater to the greed of individuals.
He also pointed out that security issues in the north-east have a unique significance in terms of national security and urged for a more immediate and aggressive response to address these pressing concerns.
