Imphal, July 6:
The Manipur Committee for Peace and Development (MCPD) from Konthoujam Assembly Constituency has submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, urging immediate action regarding the law and order crisis in Manipur. The memorandum addresses the suspension of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, the removal of “Any Kuki Tribes” from the Scheduled Tribes list, and the protection of village volunteers.
The memorandum, signed by Chief Convenor Wahengbam Kameshwor and other representatives, calls for the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants who have unlawfully settled in Manipur and acquired Indian citizenship. They urge the government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to ensure the integrity of citizenship records.
The memorandum also demands the immediate revocation of the SoO agreement between the Government of India and Kuki militant groups, arguing that this agreement undermines the rule of law and compromises national security. Furthermore, the committee urges the government to revoke the recognition of “Any Kuki Tribes” as Scheduled Tribes of India, asserting that this status should be reserved for genuine tribal communities.
In addition, the committee calls for an end to the harassment and arrest of village volunteers who have defended civilians in the absence of adequate protection from central and state forces. These volunteers, they assert, should not be penalized for their efforts to protect their communities.
Speaking to the media, Chief Convenor Wahengbam Kameshwor expressed confidence in the President’s leadership and urged prompt action to address these urgent issues. The memorandum was submitted through the Honourable Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey.
