Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Core Committee member Kshetrimayum Romesh today alleged that the prolonged violence and instability in Manipur were being “orchestrated” by the Government of India and described the ongoing conflict as a “proxy war.”
He made the remarks while addressing a sit-in protest held at Kongba Nandeibam Leikai in Imphal.
Romesh stated that when the violence first erupted on May 3, 2023, it was initially perceived as a conflict between two communities, but over time, according to him, it has become increasingly evident that the crisis reflects a larger “proxy war” involving the Indian state. He said the conflict, which could have been resolved within days or weeks, has now continued for more than three years, causing immense suffering and instability in Manipur.
Calling for unity among the people, he urged citizens to stand together to resist what he termed attempts to weaken and divide society. He also appealed to the public to protect the future of younger generations and ensure that children continue to receive education despite the prevailing unrest.
Referring to public protests and democratic movements, Romesh urged people to extend support to peaceful and democratic forms of agitation initiated by COCOMI. He also appealed for collective participation in movements aimed at safeguarding the interests and integrity of Manipur.
