Ukhrul, May 26:
Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong has expressed strong concern over a recent directive reportedly issued by Kuki Students’ Organisation regarding the installation of signboards in villages located in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
In a statement issued through its Information and Publicity Wing, TKS termed the directive “provocative” and “unconstitutional,” alleging that it could create confusion over administrative jurisdictions and further aggravate tensions in the hill districts. The organisation maintained that matters relating to district boundaries and administrative authority fall solely under the jurisdiction of the Government and cannot be decided by non-state organisations or civil bodies.
The students’ body stated that the ancestral lands and traditional jurisdictions of Ukhrul and Kamjong belong to the Tangkhul Naga community and cautioned against any move that could disturb the existing social and administrative balance in the region. It also alleged that reported warnings of inspections and possible action against villages for non-compliance could create fear and uncertainty among residents.
TKS urged all concerned organisations to exercise restraint and avoid steps that could deepen mistrust or trigger further tensions at a time when Manipur continues to face ethnic unrest and instability. The organisation stressed that any territorial or administrative disputes should be addressed only through constitutional and democratic processes.
The apex students’ body appealed to the Government of Manipur, the district administrations of Ukhrul and Kamjong, and law enforcement agencies to intervene and prevent any escalation of the issue. It also called for an inquiry into the circulation of the directive and sought protection for villages allegedly facing pressure over the matter.
At the same time, TKS appealed to village authorities, youth bodies and the public to maintain peace, restraint and communal harmony despite the prevailing tensions.
